
Eric Benavides sits down to discuss his latest venture, business philosophies, and passion for fantasy novels and action films. As an entrepreneur, he’s spent his career in residential home building, commercial construction, and AI technology. He currently holds five patents and has one patent pending for his Backyard Workroom prefab DIY kits.

Q. How did you come up with the idea for Backyard Workroom?
I view business strategy as a chess game. I pay attention to trends and what’s going on in the world. For example, when the pandemic hit, I felt working from home was a trend that would last.
Q. How do you predict that the workforce will change after COVID-19?
Companies see the impact working remotely has on their business and are looking at it long-term. I feel it will permanently change ideas, rules, procedures, and philosophies.
Q. What’s the unique feature of your DIY shed kits?
Simplicity. I set out to create a quality prefab product that is easy to move and assemble that people are proud to have in their back yards.
Q. As an entrepreneur, what keeps you motivated to start new ventures?
My employees are essential to me. What excites me is finding realistic opportunities where teams can be happier and more effective at work.
Q. Bootstrapping a new startup is challenging. How do you handle the ups and downs?
There are two ways to live: on a merry-go-round or a roller coaster. Both are fun, but you’ve got to hang on, gain momentum, and hope you end up at the top as a business owner.
Q. As a CEO, what’s the most challenging aspect of your job?
To constantly stay ahead of employees and find creative ways to stay engaged, effective, and productive every day. That’s my biggest job.
Q. What are some tips for maintaining productivity in the workplace?
Keep steering the ship in the right direction and give employees the tools they need to stay on board. A good team has synergy and works together to find solutions.
Q. You are known for scaling companies fast. So what are some philosophies for achieving personal and business growth?
Always keep your eye on the yard line, care deeply about your employees, and constantly work on your wisdom, experience, and education.
Q. If you could choose three people for your board of directors, who would they be?
Arnold Schwarzenegger, Elon Musk, and Bill Gates.
Q. What books are on your nightstand?
I listen to about 50-60 audiobooks a year. I’ve gone through hundreds of self-help. Now I listen to LitRPG fantasy novels. Aleron Kong is currently my favorite.
Q. What do you do in your spare time?
Go to the movies—and watch films like Master and Commander and Gladiator with Russell Crowe.
