Will the Future Workplace be on Zoom?

The Covid-19 pandemic has been a major disrupter in the workforce, sending droves of employees to work remotely from home, maybe even for good. One company benefited phenomenally from the mass exodus to home-based operations—Zoom.

Because the platform is free and easy to use, the majority of the population jumped on Zoom for everything from company-wide meetings and happy hours to online cooking shows, yoga classes and family events.

Phenomenal Growth

By April 2020, Zoom had over 300 million users, up from 10 million in December. Zoom’s expected revenue is projected to land between $1.775 billion and $1.8 billion—and earnings are showing a 354 percent increase in subscribed customers (Turk, 2020).

Zoom quickly transitioned to verb usage, with people Zooming left and right. A new symptom called Zoom fatigue set in as workers became weary from attending so many online meetings.

People are now wondering, will the behavior caused by the pandemic forever change how people live and work? And will Zoom continue to be a major contender in the marketplace?

Yes, on both counts.

Changing Workplace Trends

While face-to-face meetings will not be entirely replaced, companies are starting to accept the fact that more employees will continue working from home. Many are likely to set up a split schedule where they allow people to work from home two to three days a week and show up at the office the rest of the time.

Zooming from home has its fair share of embarrassing moments, from dogs barking to Zoom calls made in the kitchen, interrupted by a screeching smoke alarm. That may be one reason the demand for home office space is on the rise. Making a Zoom call from a dedicated office is much more professional. That means it looks as though we may be zooming from home for many years to come.
